London Youth Games Finals - June 2008

Congratulations to the 4 teams who took part in the London Youth Games finals at Goresbrook, East London on 21/22 June 2008. Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd June 2008 saw 32 London Boroughs converge at the Goresbrook Leisure Centre in East London for what was about to be a very long weekend of competition heats to see which borough gymnasts would come out on top for 2008.

Due to the upheaval of our club having to relocating last year it was not possible to host the Croydon Borough Championships and therefore was not able enter the 2007 Games. So having a zero against all 4 teams for 2007 we really had out work cut out for us this year. Our borough (Croydon) was seeded and placed in the early rounds, so it was nail biting tension having to wait to the very end of each day to see how our teams had done. Every single gymnast excelled this year and we saw some splendid performances. By the evening the results were in and what fantastic results we achieved for 2008. These excellent results really has shown Croydon Council that having a dedicated facility in the borough for gymnasts to train has certainly paid off. The boys and girls have benefited greatly from extra hours training, rather than wasting valuable training time setting up and dismantling equipment in a school hall. Along with determination, dedication and hard just shows it all pays off dividends in the end! We are all extremely proud of each and every gymnasts who has taken part in representing their borough this year as they successfully bagged 3 team medals and 2 individual ones as well for Croydon!

With our Boys F&V Team taking the overall Silver Medal position and with team member Joseph Honey who also won a Silver medal for his floor performance and picked up a Bronze for his half on half off vault. Then to have two teams up on the podium at the same time with our Girls F&V Team taking a team Bronze as well the excitement from all the parents in the crowded audience could not be contained.

Our Men's 6 Piece Artistic Team also brought home a Team Bronze with our Girls Artistic Team coming in a credible 13th place.

Well done to everyone (all the parents, gymnasts and the coaches) who made this achievement possible.

Croydon Borough Championship - June 2004

Croydon School of Gymnastics hosted the Croydon Borough Championships Floor & Vault Competition on Saturday 12th June. There were 2 sections to the competition. Competition 1 - For gymnasts eligible to represent the London Borough of Croydon at the Heathrow London Youth Games and Competition 2 – For gymnasts who did not fulfil LYG criteria.

Due to new changes in the rules for Gymnastics and the exclusion of Men’s & Women’s Artistic Gymnastics from the games this year has resulted in gymnasts being either too young or too good to be considered to team representation. Nevertheless having a very successful competition pictured below are all the competitors who will now be going forward to represent Croydon in the finals to be held at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre on 10th July.

The following gymnasts will now go forward to represent London borough of Croydon in LYG GIRLS F&V Finals.

Charlotte Meyer won the title of overall Division 5 Champion in 2001 and did it again this year in the Division 4 junior 12/13yr section with an overall score of 37.60. Charlotte was on top form despite a nagging foot injury. She produced neat and tidy routines, with a 9.6 for Beam and a 9.5 for her Handspring vault, these being one of the highest scores in the competition secured her the Overall Gold medal.

Also in the same age category and only 0.30 separating Gold from Silver team mate Sarah Harper took her first trip up to the Medal Rostrum picking up second place and with the highest scoring Beam exercise of the competition with a 9.65 gave Sarah her final score of 37.30.
