Pictured Above is the team who represented the London Borough of Croydon at the Mini Games. These games are similar to the main games but are aimed at grass roots level for school children in year 5 & 6. They have to be able to perform set floor skills and vaults from the schools Key Steps level 3. The team were only just put together last minute and in just over a week all the gymnasts learned 3 routines each (Floor – Vault & Body Management) The team performed excellently on the day with hardly a mistake and did us so proud by winning the Over all Team Gold at these Balfour Beatty London Youth Games on Thursday 2nd July. This was the first year Gymnastics has been introduced into these games and it looks like it is set for following years. The team comprised of (Front left) - Shania Beck who also won a Bronze Medal for her Floor Routine, next to her is Shanice Dean-Fuller. (Back left )is Jace Butler – (Centre back) - Shaquel Jarrett who also picked up a Gold on Floor and a Silver for her Vault – (Back right) Brett Sewell won an individual Gold medal for his Vault. Excellent performances by all team members – WELL DONE TO YOU ALL!

With a
record entry at all levels for the weekend of The London Open held at the
Goresbrook Leisure Centre on Sunday 22nd March, which sent the
organisers into a few somersaults of their own. When they landed it was with a 3
day timetable with the seniors taking place on Friday evening and all day
Saturday and with a massive 250 entries for the Development Open on the Sunday
morning. The spread of club and honours in the Development Open was a welcome
result for everyone on the floor and in the audience. The success of this event
is an indication of the forward thinking of the LGF Men’s Technical Committee
and the strength in the infrastructure of men’s and boy’s gymnastics in the UK.
This early fixture in the national diary also gave the club grades a test run
for judges and coaches in their preparations for the national finals in May.
CONGRATULATIONS

London Youth Games Finals - June 2008
Congratulations to the 4 teams who took part in the London Youth Games finals at Goresbrook, East London on 21/22 June 2008.
Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd June 2008 saw 32 London Boroughs converge at the Goresbrook Leisure Centre
in East London for what was about to be a very long weekend of competition heats to see which borough gymnasts would come out on
top for 2008.
Due to the upheaval of our club having to relocating last year it was not possible to host the Croydon Borough Championships and
therefore was not able enter the 2007 Games. So having a zero against all 4 teams for 2007 we really had out work cut out for us
this year. Our borough (Croydon) was seeded and placed in the early rounds, so it was nail biting tension having to wait to the
very end of each day to see how our teams had done. Every single gymnast excelled this year and we saw some splendid performances.
By the evening the results were in and and what fantastic results we achieved for 2008. These excellent results really has shown
Croydon Council that having a dedicated facility in the borough for gymnasts to train has certainly paid off. The boys and girls
have benefited greatly from extra hours training, rather than wasting valuable training time setting up and dismantling equipment
in a school hall. Along with determination, dedication and hard just shows it all pays off
dividends in the end! We are all
extremely proud of each and every gymnasts who has taken part in representing their borough this year as they successfully bagged
3 team medals and 2 individual ones as well for Croydon!
With our Boys F&V Team taking the overall Silver Medal position and with team member Joseph Honey who also won a Silver medal
for his floor performance and picked up a Bronze for his half on half off vault. Then to have two teams up on the podium at the
same time with our Girls F&V Team taking a team Bronze as well the
excitement from all the parents in the crowded audience
could not be contained.
Our Men's 6 Piece Artistic Team also brought home a Team Bronze with our Girls Artistic Team coming in a
credible 13th place.
Well done to to everyone (all the parents, gymnasts and the coaches) who made this achievement possible.
British Setwork Championship National Finals - May 2008
This competition is one of the biggest boy’s competitions in the gymnastics calendar in the UK and with all 13 regions taking
part the Benfield Sporting Excellence Centre set the stage for some entertaining gymnastics. Gymnasts travelled far and wide
from Scotland down to Lands End for this huge event for the boy’s compulsories.
Theo Stergiou from Croydon School of Gymnastics who won his place on the London Gymnastics Federation - Intermediate 2 team
travelled to Newcastle to compete in a long weekend of competitions in the British Set work Championships in May 2008.
Theo Stergiou – Aged 13 has made tremendous improvements in the last year since the club moved to it’s current location in
Thornton Heath. Theo’s ranking has improved dramatically from 46 to 23 place nationally and with his superb Handspring Vault
placed him 2nd on that apparatus.
London Development Open - 2 March 2008

The team including Scott came overall 3rd and Kiall's team came 5th. There was not a Team competition for Nisal and

Croydon Borough Championships & London Youth Games - 2006
The Croydon Borough Championships was held on Tuesday 16 May 2006 to decide the who would represent the Croydon floor and vault
teams. Unfortunately there were only five entries eligible to compete for places in the Croydon team and therefore all gymnasts
qualified for the team. The winner of the competition was Kiall Marshall, who later had to be withdrawn from the team as he had
competed regionally at too high a level. Therefore the final team was made up of Charlie Engleback, Luke Povey, Drae Hughes and
Joshua Hollens. A late entry was added to the team, Samuel Morais, however the team did not progress to the finals.
Also competing in the Croydon Borough Championships were two squad members, Armani Steward & Nisal Herath, and one guest,
Alex Tapsell. Armani and Nisal were competing for the final place in the men's 6 piece apparatus team and Armani was the victor.
Following the disappointment of the floor and vault team missing out on the finals of the London Youth Games, the six piece team
progressed to the finals finishing 4th in the qualifying competition.
The team consisting of Rory Bowen (17 and Team Captain) along with Luke Sudell (17), Scott Creasey (12), Armani Stewart (12),
Joshua Collard-Odle (11), Theo Stergiou (11) put in great performances. With massive changes to the new FIG code of points after
the Olympics this meant routines required more difficulty in order to obtain good scores. Having 2 lads (Rory & Luke) on
the team only doing gymnastics for 1 year this was a big challenge for both of them and for Luke this was his 2nd
competition ever!
Rory Bowen has been plagued with injury for the last 6 months so he was unable to compete all 6 apparatus at both the prelims
and finals. Scott Creasey injured his elbow at the prelims whilst landing a somersault dismount off Parallel Bars. This meant
his routines had to be changed for the finals taking out difficulty to ensure he competed safely. Then just 2 days before the
finals Theo Stergiou breaks his wrist playing football! With 3 gymnasts injured the teams dream of coming in 3rd just
vanished from sight as it was not possible to put up 4 gymnasts out of 6 on every apparatus, and the lads knew that they would
find it tough going even to retain their 4th place they gained in the preliminary rounds.
Despite low moral on the day and a disastrous low score for Luke of P/Bars the team were proud when they discovered
they were awarded the highest overall team score for their Vaults scoring a whopping 57.400. Luke also displayed a superb cross
on rings, and with Josh, Armani and Scott all performing tidy floors they were happy not to have come in 6th
NDP regional qualifiers and Finals - 2006
On 5th March 2006 some of our boys squads competed in the regional qualifiers at East London to represent London on
the NDP finals.
Of those competing 4 of the boys made it in their respective teams. Scott Creasey in the Intermediate 2 Team, Joshua
Collard-Odle in the Primary 1 Team, Theo Stergiou in the Primary 2 Team and Kiall Marshall in the Primary 4 Team.
The NDP finals were held on 28th to 30th April 2006 in Newcastle and was the biggest boys
competitions in the country with 13 regions taking part and gymnasts who travelled far and wide from Scotland, Ireland, Wales
& England for this huge event in the boys compulsories gymnastics calendar for 2006. The team including Scott came
overall 3rd, Joshua's team came 4th, Theo's and Kiall's respective teams came 6th. Well done boys!

Croydon Borough Championships & Heathrow Youth Games - July 2005
The Croydon Borough Championships, that took place on Saturday 28 May 2005, was used to decide the who would represent the
Croydon floor and vault team. The final team was Rory Bowen, Dhanum Nursigadoo, Christopher Hastie, Omari Carr-Miller, all from
Croydon School of Gymnastics, and Kyle White from St. James the Great. The team progressed to the finals of the Heathrow Youth
Games which took place at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.
The boys team had a good competition and ended up finishing overall 5th of the 25 teams the took part. The high light of the
competition was Rory Bowen's handspring vault for which he scored a 9.30.
Croydon Borough Championship - June 2004
Croydon School of Gymnastics hosted the Croydon Borough Championships Floor & Vault
Competition on Saturday 12th June. There were 2 sections to the competition.
Competition 1 - For gymnasts eligible to represent the London Borough of
Croydon at the Heathrow London Youth Games and Competition 2 – For gymnasts who did
not fulfil LYG criteria.
Due to new changes in the rules for Gymnastics and the exclusion of Men’s & Women’s
Artistic Gymnastics from the games this year has resulted in gymnasts being either too
young or too good to be considered to team representation. Nevertheless having a very
successful competition pictured below are all the competitors who will now be going
forward to represent Croydon in the finals to be held at Crystal Palace National Sports
Centre on 10th July.
The following gymnasts will now go forward to represent London borough of Croydon in LYG
BOYS F&V Finals.
1st Armani Stewart (From Croydon SG)
2nd Luke Griffin (From Croydon SG)
3rd Russell Noakes (From Croydon SG)

Jorden Vijayaratnam aged 12 won Gold in the Primary 1 team, Aaron Jones aged 9 was placed
overall 4 in the Primary 3 team and Scott Creasey aged 11 came in 6th in the Primary 2 team.
Unfortunately, Joshua Collard-Odle, who finished 7th in the Primary 3 competition missed out on
a place in the London Team by one place.
Floor & Vault competition - June 2004
On the same day as the Club NPD Regional Qualifiers, a Floor & Vault Competition was held
with the Croydon lads wining Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in the level 3 junior and senior
sections. Danny Symes aged 14 won Gold in the senior section with Nisal Herath winning
Silver and Sean O’Shea winning a Bronze in the junior section.

Floor & Vault Competition - 4th November 2001 - Harrow
Sunday 4th November, the date for The LGF- MTC (London Gymnastics Federation - Men's Technical Committee) Men's Floor and Vault Competition hosted by Harrow School of Gymnastics. This is a great competition for gymnasts of all abilities with lads who were just starting out in Men's Competitive Gymnastics to the well-seasoned regional & national level lads competing on the two most popular pieces of apparatus out of the men's 6 disciplines. With a relaxed and friendly atmosphere in Harrow's purpose built gymnasium, the scene was set for some great gymnastics in this 2-piece event.
The lads from were delighted to return home with a medal haul of 3 Gold's, 3 Silver's & 2 Bronze between them.
Our Results were as follows:-
Under 8's Level 3
Charlie Penn - Silver
Scott Creasey - Bronze
Robert Galbraith - 7th
Theo Stergiou - 8th
Under 10's Level 3
Liam Peskett - Silver
Charlie Shute - Bronze

Liam Spence - Gold
Under 14's Level 3
Philip Davis - Gold
Under 10's Level 2
Jorden Vijayaratnam - Gold
Under 12's Level 3
Anton Denny-Browne - Silver
We were delighted with the results and the medal haul the lads brought home, but I was particularly pleased with Jorden Vijayaratnam's Floor performance in the U10's. His well executed tumbling gained him the second highest Floor score of the day only being beaten by a lad in the senior section.
The LGF-MTC were extremely pleased to see we entered Philip Davis from GMDP (Disabilities) in this competition especially after his recent success in the Southern Regions 3-piece apparatus in October. Although it was a shame he ended up being the only competitor in this age group Davis put on a good show considering the company he was in. He received a well deserved round of applause from the audience and gymnasts alike after his performances and when collecting his well earned gold medal.
It is hoped that more clubs will encourage their gymnasts who have special needs to enter more of the regions Floor and Vault Competitions with the intention to integrate gymnasts with special needs into all aspects of our sport.
London Men's Development Programme Open Championships
March 2001
After seeing how successful the LMDP had become in London during 2000, word had reached the rest of the country.
At the National Finals in December the LGF-MTC took copies of 50 books with the LMDP levels to give out over the course of the weekend - the 50 books went in 5 minutes with many clubs and regions having become interested our Development Programme.
The London Gymnastics Federation Men's Technical Committee took in hand the organisation of a huge a two day competition event with The LMDP on Saturday 31st March and the most prestigious Senior Men's Competition in the Calendar being The Men's London Open on Sunday 1st April.
East London proudly staged the event, and Jackie Lewis and the team from Croydon School of Gymnastics had the arduous task in helping the Gymnova Technicians setting up and checking all the equipment the Friday night before the big event. With so much to do everyone was busy as bees, sorting out T-shirts for gymnasts & officials, medals, trophies and certificates had to be in order. Collating and stapling programmes together, organising passes for coaches, judges & officials. Preparing the judges tables. Checking out the sound system and the walkie talkies. Plus setting up a special area for the VIP's & sponsors to view the event.
Gymnasts were given a commemorative T-shirt to mark the occasion plus a certificate no matter where they came in competition.
Judges & officials were treated like VIP's, the VIP's were treated like Royalty, and all the little helpers were fed and watered and given a T-shirt too.
As for the gymnasts taking part, they competed on the finest gymnastics equipment by Gymnova in one of the best gymnasiums in the country. Met, competed against and made friends with gymnasts from other regions, and judged by some of the country's top Brevet Judges.
Our Results were as follows:-

Robert Galbraith - Silver with Gold on Vault & P/Bars - passed with Merit

LGF Men's Technical Committee Invitational Floor and Vault Competition
On Sunday 7th May 2000, Hillingdon School of Gymnastics hosted the first LGF Men's Invitational Floor and Vault Competition. This competition was aimed at both regional and development level gymnasts, with levels 1 - 3 (3 being for the top performers.) We entered 18 boys who brought back a total of 11 medals. Unfortunately Swarup Menon was ill and could not attend and Josh Quiney, carrying a nagging knee injury, was unable to perform to his usual best.
For some of the boys this was only their second competition and they all performed splendid routines on the day, with some exceptional performances from Melvin Yip, Patrick Higgins, Shaun Collins and Dylan Kemp who, after a 7 year retirement, has come back with a vengeance, winning no less than 2 medals in the last month. Our results were as follows:
