What is the Achievement Award Scheme?

This popular programme now operates in approximately 2,000 schools, colleges and youth organisations throughout London and Essex.  The scheme contributes millions of pounds each year to support youth work in London and Essex.

The Achievement Award Scheme aims to enable schools, colleges and youth organisations to recognise, reward and celebrate the achievements of their young people. Jack Petchey wants young people to raise their aspirations, believe in themselves and make a contribution to their society.

Achievement Awards are designed to recognise a wide range of achievement, it is not just about being clever, or gifted, but about putting the effort in and doing your best. The scheme works well because young people themselves are involved in nominating and selecting the winners.

In addition to the Achievement Awards, the Young People may choose to nominate an adult leader for an annual Leader Award. This is a positive way to publicly recognise the efforts of adults who have made a significant contribution to young people.

How the Achievement Awards Scheme works

Participating groups regularly select a young person to receive an Achievement Award (frequency depends on type of membership).  The winner is publicly congratulated for their achievement and receives:

•   A framed certificate
•   A Jack Petchey Young Achiever badge
•   £200 to be spent on a school/club or community project of the recipient’s choice.

The young person chooses how their award money is to be spent - this can be spent on additional activities or new equipment.
There are three levels of scheme available:

Bronze Scheme:
You will have three Young People’s Achievement Awards to allocate each year – Awards totalling £600 per annum

Silver Scheme: (We are currently at this level)
You will have six Young People’s Achievement Awards to allocate each year - Awards totalling £1200 per annum

Gold Scheme:
You will have nine Young People’s Achievement Awards to allocate each year - Awards totalling £1800 per annum
Clubs/schools are placed on the Bronze, Silver, Gold Scheme schemes based on the following factors:

•   The nature of the activity
•   The length/frequency of contact
•   Turnover of group membership
•   Regular numbers of YP attending
•   Opportunities for young people to participate in running the scheme

Leader Awards

Introduction:

We understand that sometimes young people and youth organisations want to recognise the efforts of those who support them. The Jack Petchey Leader Awards are designed to do just that. Linked to the Jack Petchey Achievement Award Scheme, they enable groups to publicly honour the dedication and commitment of staff and volunteers – particularly recognising those ‘who go the extra mile’ to support young people.

Any school or club participating in the Achievement Award Scheme for over a year can nominate a Leader who they wish to recognise publicly.

Awards are given to adults who have demonstrated, in an outstanding way, an ability to encourage and motivate young people aged 11-25 in London or Essex.

How the scheme works:

The scheme is open to youth leaders, school teachers, community leaders, volunteer leaders, sports coaches and any other adults who regularly work with young people, are over 21 years old, and have been involved in your organisation for at least 2 years.

It works best when young people, other leaders, teachers and volunteers are all involved in choosing an adult for this award. Encourage people to nominate and maybe even consider a vote to select the final winner.

  • The Foundation can supply a Nomination Box.
  • Nomination Forms can be downloaded from the Jack Petchey website.

Once you have decided who your Leader Award winner is, send your application to Jack Petchey Foundation

When your choice has been accepted by the Foundation your leader will be:

  • Invited to a JPF Presentation ceremony (alternatively a medallion and certificate can be supplied to you for presentation at your own ceremony or event).
  • Presented with a gilt medallion and certificate to recognise their outstanding commitment and dedication to young people.

What to do next:

Once you and your young people have chosen a deserving adult winner, complete the Leader Award Application Form telling us why they should win, and send it to the Jack Petchey Foundation.

The Scheme within Croydon School of Gymnastics

In 2008 we were delighted to hear that we had been awarded the Jack Petchey Foundation Achievement - Silver Award. This was awarded to us as our club has between 50 -100 active young people participating in Gymnastics between the ages of 11 & 25 years of age.

How The Award Works

Every 6 weeks (8 awards per year) a member of the club will be nominated for this award through an internal ballot to receive this award. They do not have to be the best gymnast in the club, squad or class, but they have to be someone who has made an outstanding contribution to the club in some way.

The club receives a cheque directly from the foundation which we bank and the gymnast who is chosen for the award gets to present the club with a dummy cheque. The gymnast has their photo taken and is placed on the role of honour chart at the club. Then with the help of the coaches they decide what they would like the award money to be spent on, by choosing something from the gym club's wish list.

For doing that they are presented with a lovely Jack Petchey Certificate and pin badge which is presented to them at a annual club event. All award winners are annually invited to a Jack Petchey award ceremony where each award recipient receives a Gold medallion.

Over 130 young people aged between 11 & 25 from many different Sports Clubs, Theatre Groups, Dance & Drama, Arts, Youth Clubs & Education came together with their coaches, leaders and family to join in with the celebrations. This ceremony really high lighted the positive attributes of our young people, and they were made to feel really special as each award winner was presented with a boxed medallion in recognition of their achievement.

What a super evening’s entertainment with Ryan Curtis having us all in fits of laughter whilst comparing the evening along with his side kick Lee Thompson. Some excellent performances from dancer Alex Peters, singer Ruth Brown & the drummers from Addington High School really warmed the evening despite it being freezing cold in the theatre!

All those who received an award that evening are truly a credit to themselves, their families and their club. Not forgetting of course the support and encouragement they have been given from their parents and their coaches. Well Done to You All. Keep up the hard work it really does pay off in the end!

Katie Russell Aged 23 was a member of CSOG many years when the club was based at the Purley Oaks School in South Croydon. She was a member of our girl’s squad who underwent many hours training a week. She represented her club at local and regional competition events and the highlight of her gymnastics was when she was selected for the “Mary Poppins” display team who represent GB at the World Gymnaestrada held in Gotenburg in 1999. When Katie moved to high school she found that she could not fit in all her school work and training and decided to give up competitive gymnastics. She then left CSOG and joined a little club that did just Floor & Vault & display work.

Eventually Katie went onto university in Bournemouth studying Leisure Marketing. When Katie was home from university for the holidays she decided to come along and visit us when the gym relocated to Thornton Heath. She then joined our Adults Class and would often help out with coaching from time to time. Then a year later she joined our coaching team and has since gone onto taking her coaching more seriously and has recently passed the first coaching level for Women’s Artistic Gymnastics. Katie now fits in coaching at the club in between her shifts at work and is a welcome addition to our senior coaching team. We therefore feel she deserves this Jack Petchey Award.

MAY 2011 - AWARDED TO JAMES HODGKINSON

James Hodgkinson Aged 20 has been a loyal member of Croydon School of Gymnastics since he was 6. Although he remain in the recreational level and James never wished to compete in gymnastics he attended for recreation and enjoyment throughout his school years. James also recently joined the Nottingham Gymnastics Club and keeps in contact with the club sending video’s of his successful gymnastic skills he’s recently achieved. James always returns to us when he’s back home from university for the holidays.

Over the years James has gained considerably from his involvement in the sport of Gymnastics. Gymnastics has helped him gain strength, balance and co-ordination which has also greatly helped with his other sports with Judo being his main sport. FEBRUARY 2011 - AWARDED TO JORDEN VIJAYARATNAM

Jorden Vijayaratnam Aged 18 first joined the club when it was based in the Purley Oaks School – South Croydon in 1999 at the aged 7. Jorden joined one of the clubs recreational classes and quickly progressed to the Men’s Artistic Squad. He first competed in 2000 and came away with his first gold in the boy’s level 5 under 8s in London Men’s Development Programme. From there on he competed in many local, regional and national competitions and has won many medals along the way for his powerful and difficult skills on all 6 apparatus. When asked what his greatest achievement was in gymnastics, he states getting his double back somersault off high bar when he went on a training camp to Russia in 2004. Unfortunately Jorden left the club when he found it difficult juggling his school work with his training.

However, since starting working life Jorden found he missed his gymnastics and has recently returned to the club to learn to become a Men’s Coach and is currently attending a level 1 coaching course. Jorden can be seen at the club coaching youngsters in the recreational classes on Thursday and Saturdays and is also working with the younger boys squads. Jorden is currently in training and recently competed in the Annual Squad Championships and placed a respectable 4th. Although he competed in the British Veterans last year as a guest he hopes to return later this year to start winning medals again even if it is in the OAP section!

DECEMBER 2010 - AWARDED TO NICOLE THOMPSON

Nicole Thompson Aged 15 joined the club when she was aged 10. She progressed through the clubs recreational programme eventually gaining a place in our Women’s Floor & Vault Squad and is now one of our leading female gymnasts in this squad.

Nicole is a very powerful gymnast particularly on the vault but has grace and a style of her own on floor with her dynamic dance and choreography skills. She has qualified for the Croydon Borough Team twice now for the London Youth Games. The team achieved 5th place out of the 33 London boroughs for 2010. Nicole hopes to be selected again this year for the squad so as she can repeat and build upon this achievement. Nicole has picked up several medals for regional competition and also won a pin for the bronze LGF F&V competition. She is currently competing in the regions Silver level and hopes to be able to gain her pin at this level before moving to the Gold level.

Nicole is currently in full-time GCSE study but she manages to train twice a week and in addition to those commitments she volunteers her time twice a week by coaching youngsters in our Saturday morning Kindergarten classes as well as coaching girls aged 6-9 years in the Friday recreational class. She now has a pivotal role as a coach in those classes. Nicole along with 4 other senior gymnasts have each received a Mayor’s Legacy Award to help pay towards the cost of attending a coaching course this March.

We therefore feel she is a worthy candidate for a Jack Petchey Achievement Award.

NOVEMBER 2010 - AWARDED TO KYLE WHITE

Kyle White Aged 22 didn’t start his gymnastics with us here at Croydon School of Gymnastics as his younger years were spent in a little after school club. As a young boy he came along to participate in one of our summer holiday schemes with one his mates back in 1997. He found his first experience at the club to be daunting and very disciplined something he was not use to. However, at the end of the holiday training he was given the opportunity to join the club, something he now apparently regrets!

Years later in 2004 he quit training and became a coach at his old club. He learnt all the basics with his old coach and went onto pass his first coaching qualification. He later joined our adult’s class taking up the sport again. After about a year we entered Kyle into some competitions and when he started picking up some medals, he soon got hooked. He later then expressed an interest in coaching and starting working along side the head coach developing his skills further not just in general gymnastics but in Men’s & Women’s Artistic Gymnastics to.

Kyle now is the only adult gymnast to hold a gold pin in London in the LGF General Gymnastics Floor & Vault. He also represented the club in British Gymnastics National Veteran’s competitions in 2008 & 2009 and helped the Men’s Team win silver in these events. Kyle’s ambition is to win a gold medal at this event and strives hard as he works towards his goals.

He says, “If he had taken that opportunity back in 97’ to join CroydonSoG, maybe I would have achieved greater things”.

However, he represented Croydon in Men’s Artistic in the London Youth Games for the previous 3 years and helped his team win a team bronze in 2008. He was also awarded most improved gymnast in the squads for 2009.

Sam is a flexible yet strong and powerful gymnast who has a natural charisma when performing in competition with his especially being the floor exercise. This is due to his dance background as he trains in street and break dance in addition to his gymnastics and full-time studies.

Sam has also been actively involved in coaching voluntarily in our Kindergarten and Recreational Classes. He attended a Summer University course last year for gymnastics coaching and has recently qualified as a Men’s Artistic Club Judge. Sam now is involved in assisting in the development and Mini squad training session every Tuesday and would like to go onto further is coaching qualifications by attending a coaching course next year. From losing to winning and even missing Gold medals by just 0.1 of a mark, he just loved the thrill of gymnastics as it was always the taking part that mattered for Charlie!

Training was time consuming but definitely worth it as Charlie says his fitness has never been better! When he reached the age of 13 he decided to have a break from his gymnastics, but after a couple of years he just had to come back and with a lot of hard work and training he steadily got his fitness back and from then on he hasn’t looked back as he helped the Croydon Men’s Team win a bronze medal in the 2008 London Youth Games!

She dedicated to them 3 evenings a week and all day on a Saturday. She also gave most of her free time throughout her school holidays to these girls to. He was very much over weight, had no confidence and had low esteem and was very lethargic. However, he met up with Philip who is on the GB National Squad and Phil was an inspiration to Daniel, so much so he became very enthusiastic about the sport of Gymnastics. During his first year Dan shed over 2 stone in weight and started training hard on all the Men's 6 disciplines.

In October last year Daniel entered his first competition (The Poole Open - Dorset)and walked away with 3 medals (Gold on Parallel Bars, Silver on Vault and Bronze on Floor). Scott has also recently won a gold medal at the Men's London Open - Level 6 in the U16 & as Team Captain he helped his team win a Bronze medal at the 2008 London Youth Games.
