What is the Achievement Award Scheme?

This popular programme now operates in approximately 2,000 schools, colleges and youth organisations throughout London and Essex.  The scheme contributes millions of pounds each year to support youth work in London and Essex.

The Achievement Award Scheme aims to enable schools, colleges and youth organisations to recognise, reward and celebrate the achievements of their young people. Jack Petchey wants young people to raise their aspirations, believe in themselves and make a contribution to their society.

Achievement Awards are designed to recognise a wide range of achievement, it is not just about being clever, or gifted, but about putting the effort in and doing your best. The scheme works well because young people themselves are involved in nominating and selecting the winners.

In addition to the Achievement Awards, the Young People may choose to nominate an adult leader for an annual Leader Award. This is a positive way to publicly recognise the efforts of adults who have made a significant contribution to young people.

How the Achievement Awards Scheme works

Participating groups regularly select a young person to receive an Achievement Award (frequency depends on type of membership).  The winner is publicly congratulated for their achievement and receives:

•   A framed certificate
•   A Jack Petchey Young Achiever badge
•   £200 to be spent on a school/club or community project of the recipient’s choice.

The young person chooses how their award money is to be spent - this can be spent on additional activities or new equipment.
There are three levels of scheme available:

Bronze Scheme:
You will have three Young People’s Achievement Awards to allocate each year – Awards totalling £600 per annum

Silver Scheme: (We are currently at this level)
You will have six Young People’s Achievement Awards to allocate each year - Awards totalling £1200 per annum

Gold Scheme:
You will have nine Young People’s Achievement Awards to allocate each year - Awards totalling £1800 per annum
Clubs/schools are placed on the Bronze, Silver, Gold Scheme schemes based on the following factors:

•   The nature of the activity
•   The length/frequency of contact
•   Turnover of group membership
•   Regular numbers of YP attending
•   Opportunities for young people to participate in running the scheme

Leader Awards

Introduction:

We understand that sometimes young people and youth organisations want to recognise the efforts of those who support them. The Jack Petchey Leader Awards are designed to do just that. Linked to the Jack Petchey Achievement Award Scheme, they enable groups to publicly honour the dedication and commitment of staff and volunteers – particularly recognising those ‘who go the extra mile’ to support young people.

Any school or club participating in the Achievement Award Scheme for over a year can nominate a Leader who they wish to recognise publicly.

Awards are given to adults who have demonstrated, in an outstanding way, an ability to encourage and motivate young people aged 11-25 in London or Essex.

How the scheme works:

The scheme is open to youth leaders, school teachers, community leaders, volunteer leaders, sports coaches and any other adults who regularly work with young people, are over 21 years old, and have been involved in your organisation for at least 2 years.

It works best when young people, other leaders, teachers and volunteers are all involved in choosing an adult for this award. Encourage people to nominate and maybe even consider a vote to select the final winner.

  • The Foundation can supply a Nomination Box.
  • Nomination Forms can be downloaded from the Jack Petchey website.

Once you have decided who your Leader Award winner is, send your application to Jack Petchey Foundation

When your choice has been accepted by the Foundation your leader will be:

  • Invited to a JPF Presentation ceremony (alternatively a medallion and certificate can be supplied to you for presentation at your own ceremony or event).
  • Presented with a gilt medallion and certificate to recognise their outstanding commitment and dedication to young people.

What to do next:

Once you and your young people have chosen a deserving adult winner, complete the Leader Award Application Form telling us why they should win, and send it to the Jack Petchey Foundation.

The Scheme within Croydon School of Gymnastics

In 2008 we were delighted to hear that we had been awarded the Jack Petchey Foundation Achievement - Silver Award. This was awarded to us as our club has between 50 -100 active young people participating in Gymnastics between the ages of 11 & 25 years of age.

How The Award Works

Every 6 weeks (8 awards per year) a member of the club will be nominated for this award through an internal ballot to receive this award. They do not have to be the best gymnast in the club, squad or class, but they have to be someone who has made an outstanding contribution to the club in some way.

The club receives a cheque directly from the foundation which we bank and the gymnast who is chosen for the award gets to present the club with a dummy cheque. The gymnast has their photo taken and is placed on the role of honour chart at the club. Then with the help of the coaches they decide what they would like the award money to be spent on, by choosing something from the gym club's wish list.

For doing that they are presented with a lovely Jack Petchey Certificate and pin badge which is presented to them at a annual club event. All award winners are annually invited to a Jack Petchey award ceremony where each award recipient receives a Gold medallion.

JANUARY 2010 - AWARDED TO CHARLOTTE WALKER

Charlotte Walker Aged 21
First joined Croydon School of Gymnastics in 1998, when she was 10 years old. She transferred from her club at Crystal Palace and was promoted straight into the girl’s squad. Charlotte represented us in many competitions and has won many accolades but her most memorable was when she won two Silver LGF Awards and for scoring the highest vault score for that year with 9.8 in a London Regional Competition, but then vault has always been her favourite piece of apparatus!

In 2001, at the age of 13, she started voluntarily helping out in the Saturday morning recreational classes. She really enjoyed coaching the recreational classes but so longed to progress in her coaching so she started assisting with the clubs youngest group of squad girls. After 2 years coaching experience Charlotte went on to take her first coaching award in 2003. For the next 3 years Charlotte was given her own group of squad girls. She dedicated to them 3 evenings a week and all day on a Saturday. She also gave most of her free time throughout her school holidays to these girls to. Charlotte was a dedicated young lady who was willing to pass on her wealth of experience as a gymnast and now coach in order to help these gymnasts build on their successes.

Charlotte attended many competitions with these girls and helped them get through all their grades competitions. Unfortunately in 2006 she left the club as she went into full time employment and higher education which has taken up all of her free time as she is studying to be an accountant. However, to this day Charlotte can be seen at many of the clubs fund raising functions and events and is still willing to help whenever required. She is certainly a worthy nominee for the Jack Petchey Achievement Award.

NOVEMBER 2009 - AWARDED TO JESSICA MILLS

Jessica Mills – Aged 20
has been a member of Croydon School of Gymnastics since the age of 5. She has taken on a number of roles including gymnast, coach and receptionist. Jess worked her way up the ranks of the club gaining Senior Girls A-Squad Status. She competed in numerous competitions firstly in Women’s Artistic then when she retired from the 4 apparatus events she went into Team Gym and from there into the Display Squad. In recent years Jess has entered competitions for adults Floor & Vault.

Jess has represented her club in many competitions nationally & regionally including the London Youth Games and in house competitions. Her most memorable achievement was when she was part of the Junior Mixed team that competed at the British Team Gym Championships in 1999 & 2000 finishing 2nd in National events.

Away from competing, she was part of various display teams that put on routines at the London Festival of Gymnastics.  Carrying on from the success of these displays, she became a member of the ‘Mary Poppins’ display team that was selected to represent Great Britain at the 11th World Gymnastrada held in Sweden in 1999.

Although, now retired from gymnastics a number of years ago, she still occasionally gets her leotard out for an airing to take part in the sport, competing whenever the opportunity arises or when she is home from university! Jessica plays a major role within The London Gymnastics Federation. She is a member of the Men’s Technical Committee and has volunteered her services for the past five years to the London Region. Jess can often be seen at many of the boys Regional and National competitions and this year she was recognised for her services to the sport and was awarded a Bronze Award at this year’s LGF Awards Dinner. When she is home from university she is always willing to help and assist at the club and can be seen at many of the clubs events. She is therefore a fitting candidate for this Jack Petchey Achievement Award

SEPTEMBER 2009 – AWARDED TO PHILIP DAVIS

Philip Davis – Aged 24 - 15/06/1985
has attended Croydon School of Gymnastics since the age of 3. He has worked his way up through the ranks of the club and has represented his club and country. He has competed in regional, national and has attended 3 international events. He dearly loves his sport and spends most of the time in the gym. He trains 5 days a week and is always keen to help out in any way he can. Despite his disability, Philip has managed to pass his Level 1 coaching award and has qualified as a regional competition judge. He is a highly respected gymnast and coach within our sport and is also well known in Russia where he has attended no less than 3 Russian Summer Camps!

Philip is currently a member of the Men’s National Disabilities Squad. He won the title of British Junior Champion in 2002 and Senior British Champion is 2005.

He narrowly missed going to Beijing – Shanghai in 2007 for the “Special Olympics” on a technicality. However, he did attend as part of the British National Squad a training camp in South Africa in 2007, Gran Canaria in 2008, and Berlin this year (2009) The squad is travelling and visiting countries to help GB who are the world leaders in disabilities encouraging more countries to take part so as “Gymnastics” can be part of the Paralympics. In July 2009 Philip represented the London region in the “Special Olympics” National Games in Leicester and won 5 medals. We therefore feel Philip is a fitting applicant for the “Jack Petchey Award”

August 2009 - Awarded to Theo Stergiou

Theo Stergiou
aged 14 has been a long standing member of this club since the age 6. He is currently a member of the boys A-squad. He has represented his club and the region at many competition and has competed at no less than 3 UK National Finals with his ranking moving from 23rd to 13th place this year and last year he was placed 2nd on vault. Theo was also a member of the Men's Artistic Team for The London Youth Games for the past 3 years and he helped the team win a bronze medal last year.

Theo is also very interested in coaching and will be attending his first coaching course this summer. He gives up his Saturday morning's come to the club to help out where needed and is a very keen and enthusiastic member of the squad and is a deserved nominee for this award.

JUNE 2009 – AWARDED TO DANIEL QUICK

Daniel Quick - Aged 23
is a member of the Disabilities Squad. Daniel was a former member when he was young boy. However, around the age of 9 he developed Encephalitis which brought on Frontal Lobe Syndrome and he also suffers with epilepsy and can suffer anything from 3 - 7 epileptic seizures a week. However, Daniel re-joined the club approximately 2 and a half years ago, when he started attending our weekly adults class. He was very much over weight, had no confidence and had low esteem and was very lethargic. However, he met up with Philip who is on the GB National Squad and Phil was an inspiration to Daniel, so much so he became very enthusiastic about the sport of Gymnastics. During his first year Dan shed over 2 stone in weight and started training hard on all the Men's 6 disciplines.

In October last year Daniel entered his first competition (The Poole Open - Dorset)and walked away with 3 medals (Gold on Parallel Bars, Silver on Vault and Bronze on Floor). Earlier this year he entered the GMPD National Finals and won the individual Silver Nationally for level 7. With just 2 competitions under his belt the London Region selected him along with Philip to represent London at the National Special Olympics Summer Games in Leicester end of July this year. Daniel has also just come back from an intense weekend trials for National Squad held in Glasgow. I am very pleased to say we received confirmation today that Daniel is now a member of the Men's British Squad. Daniel has made an outstanding contribution to his sport and to our club and therefore we feel he is a worthy recipient for a Jack Petchey Award.

April 2009 - Awarded to Scott Creasey

Scott Scott Creasey
Scott is currently a member of the Men's Regional Squad, he has represented his club both regionally and nationally and to date has competed at 3 National Finals winning two team Bronze medals for The London Region.

Scott has always been a hard working member of the team and since our gym relocated to Thornton Heath in July 2007, Scott has had a massive growth spurt and for the past 2 years has had to over come many difficulties within his training due to increased height. With a centre of gravity change Scott has had to relearn many skills again. However, this has never deterred him from continuing in his sport and his perseverance is now beginning to pay off as new skills are just emerging. Scott has also recently won a gold medal at the Men's London Open - Level 6 in the U16 & as Team Captain he helped his team win a Bronze medal at the 2008 London Youth Games. He therefore is clearly a deserving winner for this months award as he has made a substantial contribution to his region as well as his club.

February 2009 - Awarded to Nisal Herath

Nisal Nisal Herath
was chosen for this months award because since the age of 8 he has steadily worked his way up through the ranks of the club and the region eventually making the LGF London Team twice, and has competed at the National Finals. Nisal is a quite unassuming lad who never puts foot wrong or word out of place, he is a shining example to his peers especially the younger members of the club. Nisal was also a part of the Men's London Youth Games Team for 2008 and who helped his team win a bronze medal.

December 2008 - Awarded to Bethany Charlton

Armani & Bethany Bethany Charlton

Bethany has also recently won two regional gold medals for these 2 disciplines.

October 2008 (Our first award

Armani was inspired to lose weight and become a better gymnast. After that training camp Armani changed his diet for a healthier option, worked extremely hard in the gym. Through hard work and determination Armani was selected to represent The London Borough of Croydon for the London Youth Games and helped his team bring back the bronze medal. He has also represented The London Region at the Men's National Finals and gained a credible 4th place.
