Our team who represented the London Borough of Croydon at the Balfour Beatty Mini Games held at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre on Thursday 30th June did the club proud by holding onto the title of overall London Borough Champions for the third year running. These games are similar to the main games but are aimed at grass roots level for school children in years 3 & 4. Each team of 6 has to put up 4 gymnasts to compete on each of the 3 apparatus (Floor, Vault & Body Management (known as PPP). These routines are set routines and are taken from the BG Key Steps Level 2 programme designed especially for schools. Each year in April we host the Croydon Borough Championships and the winning gymnasts go forward to represent Croydon at the Mini Games in July. The team undergo rigorous training leading with their coaches – this year team managers were Kyle White & Mary Mangan, they then select a volunteer this year Nicole Thompson to take to the competition. The volunteer gains competition experience by assisting the coaches & gymnasts on the day. The team all performed excellently on the day but with some exceptional individual performances earned medals and high positions which put our team 0.8 in front of the team from Brent who came in 2nd behind Croydon.

22nd November 2009

On 22nd November 2010 some of your gymnasts took part in the Floor & Vault competition in Cheam. The results are as follows:

Congratulations to all those that competed.

CONGRATULATIONS

To our Adult Squad Gymnasts who all performed superbly at this year’s British Veterans competition - held at the Basingstoke Gymnastics Club last Saturday 19th September.  The competition was an early start and it was clear to see who had been out clubbing the night before! However 150 gymnasts descended from all over the country at the Basingstoke gym centre. The age range was from the age 20 to Dorothy McLennan from Woking who took part at 74 years young!  Dorothy amazed everyone with her performances and got a standing ovation for her floor routine. All the ladies teams had to perform 3 out of their 4 disciplines where as the men had to work 4 out of 6 apparatus – teams could consist of 3 or 4 gymnasts but only the top 3 individual scores would count plus an age bonus to reach a final total.

There were some nail biting performances with Coach Jackie Lewis praying they’d get through their routines without having to come on with an oxygen tank! With all but 2 gymnasts carrying injuries it was touch and go if they’d even compete the night before. Amazingly with the old adrenalin pumping pain was soon forgotten or maybe it was down to the teams Physio - Michael doing a superb job with the strapping? Nevertheless, both teams put in excellent performances with no major slip ups and did the club proud. As you can see from the delighted faces in the picture below they were all so thrilled to be on the medal rostrum taking the silver team medals. Some individual outstanding performances were seen by Kyle white & Rachel Payne saw them take an individual silver and bronze medal. An absolute brilliant result this year for our women’s team after only coming in 8th last year to bring home a silver is outstanding work ladies!

WELL DONE TEAM!

East London Floor & Vault Competition 7th June 2009

To our Senior Floor & Vault Squad Gymnasts, who all performed splendidly and between them managed to bring home 3 Gold medals (2 with pins for achieving maximum score on F&V), 3 Silver’s & 2 bronze medals in the LGF F&V Competition held at East London on Sunday 8th June 2009.

For David Simms this was his first gymnastics competition and not only did he win a gold medal but he also won a pin which means he can now compete in the Gold Level in December.

Becky Stone one of our old ex-squad girls returned to our adult’s class recently and in just 2 weeks put together a wonderful floor routine. Also our Zoe Aubert went to the competition with a completely new choreographed floor routine that wowed the judges with her cheeky dance moves, however a small tumbling error cost Zoe a medal position. Better luck next time round Zoe!

A brilliant performance by Kyle White although the judges nearly fainted with his spectacular wipe out in warm-up, thank goodness he didn’t repeat it in competition otherwise he wouldn’t have won gold or that prestigious pin at this level which now means the LGF organising committee will now have to invent another level of competition just for Kyle as he’s blown the roof off the rules for these two events! Well done Kyle.

Now not everything was roses for us on Sunday, another one of our coaches - Ina Tsankvoa had to be withdrawn from competition after rupturing her Achilles tendon in warm-up just before she was due to perform her floor routine. However, after 17 years retirement from competitive gymnastics Ina did manage to perform the best vault of the day by the women so not all was lost, although she was disappointed she could not finish the competition as she had to be taken to hospital and to undergo surgery. We are happy to report that she has now recovered and is back coaching.

British Veterans - 20th Sept 2008

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OUR ADULT GYMNASTS WHO TOOK PART IN THE BRITISH VETERANS COMPETITION HELD AT PIPERS VALE

IPSWICH ON SUNDAY 20TH SEPTEMBER

On 20th September gymnasts from far and wide descended at Pipers Vale for a full days programme with a record entry brought gymnasts competing in Men's & Women's Artistic Gymnastics, Sports Acrobatics & Trampolining. The categories split into former competitive and gymnasts who entered adult recreational classes and got the but for gymnastics! and with those formers never seeming to lose that competitive streak saw some brilliant performances.

For all of them it was about personal achievement and being able to socialise with people of all ages who just love the sport. There was even a lady called Dorothy who had to enter the over 60's because there wasn't a category for the over 70's! Yes at the grand age of 73 she competed and everyone gave her a standing ovation every time she took to the floor to compete. We even picked up a Trampolinist from the competition who wanted to join our team after seeing our Men perform. Mark is now a regular who attends every Thursday night.

Pictured below is our Men's Team who were placed 2nd with Ian Coupar winning the overall silver medal too! (Pictured - Left to right) Kyle White, Ian Coupar & Jon Stevens.
